Start with what is backing up

If the nearest chamber is clear, a single slow toilet or sink is likely to have a problem before that chamber. If the chamber is full, check the next point downstream and whether neighbouring properties are affected before arranging private work.

Check with Scottish Water where the problem may be shared

In Scotland, responsibility is not described in exactly the same way as in England and Wales. Scottish Water generally deals with the public sewer network, while owners are responsible for private drainage serving their property up to the relevant connection or boundary.

If the same drain keeps blocking

For a drain that repeatedly blocks, keep the measured distance from the chamber where it is cleared. CCTV after cleaning should concentrate on that point, looking for root entry, a displaced joint or loss of pipe shape rather than surveying blindly.

Choose the repair after you have seen the defect

If repair is proposed, ask which section of footage supports it and how that point has been located above ground. A local joint problem may be repairable from inside; a badly displaced or collapsed section may need digging out.
