Toilet Keeps Blocking

One toilet or the whole system?

If one toilet is causing trouble but the other toilets, sinks and outside gullies are working normally, start close to that toilet. If several fittings rise, drain slowly or gurgle at the same time, the blockage is more likely to be farther along the system.

If flushing the upstairs toilet makes the downstairs pan rise, both are feeding into a restricted common pipe. If only one pan struggles and the nearby chamber remains normal, keep the search close to that toilet.

Why the toilet can block again after it has been cleared

Wipes, excessive paper or a foreign object can create a one-off obstruction. A rough joint, scale build-up or root intrusion can act differently: the drain may clear, work for a while and then catch more material at the same place.

What repeated toilet blockages can tell you

A collapsed pipe is one possible explanation for serious recurring blockages, but it is not the default explanation. A camera survey after cleaning is a much better basis for deciding whether repair is needed.

What happens when you flush can help locate the blockage

If the toilet rises and drains slowly, watch the nearest outside chamber while you flush. A rising chamber level puts the restriction beyond that point. If the chamber stays normal and only the toilet struggles, check the pan connector, soil branch and nearby pipework first.

Where a toilet has been recently replaced, a poor connection, misplaced pan connector or object trapped close to the outlet can also produce repeated trouble without any defect in the underground drain.
